In the summer of 2022, a promising young woman's life was tragically cut short in Detroit, Michigan. Zambrecia Works, a 22-year-old female, was found deceased in the back of an SUV on August 12, 2022, on Stahelin Avenue. Known affectionately as 'Breezy,' she was an intern with the Detroit Fire Department and a participant in the 'No Barrier to Success' program, with aspirations of becoming a doctor.
Her death, which came just days before her 23rd birthday, was the result of a violent encounter that ended her life.
The investigation into her death quickly led authorities to a suspect. On August 20, 2022, police arrested 46-year-old Gregory Bernard Reynolds, Jr. in connection with the murder. An investigation revealed that an argument between Reynolds and Works on August 11 escalated, leading to him allegedly shooting her multiple times. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm. During his arraignment, it was revealed that Reynolds had a significant criminal history, including a prior conviction for assault with intent to murder. He was on probation for a drug offense at the time of the incident.
During court proceedings, a motive for the brutal act was suggested. It was alleged that Reynolds told a witness he shot Works because she was going to 'call in her people on him,' and that he 'had to finish it off.' Reynolds was remanded to the Wayne County Jail without bond. In January 2023, a judge ruled that there was enough evidence for Gregory Reynolds, Jr. to stand trial on the murder charges. The judge condemned the senseless violence of the crime, stating, 'If these allegations are true, this is exactly the kind of element that we need to rid our city of. This is the worst kind of bloodthirsty crime.'
