A tragic and unusual sequence of events led to the death of 22-year-old Reed Elliott Carter, a Black male from Ypsilanti, Michigan, on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2020. The incident occurred inside an apartment where Carter was with his friend, 22-year-old Marcus Mackey.
According to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, the event was not a criminal act but a tragic accident. Investigations concluded that Mackey died by suicide, and the single bullet discharged in that act also struck and fatally wounded Carter. Emergency services transported Carter to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Mackey was pronounced dead at the scene.
The authorities confirmed that only one shot was fired, which was the cause of both fatalities. Due to the nature of the incident being a suicide and an accidental death, there were no suspects or arrests made in connection with Reed Elliott Carter's passing. The community was left to mourn the loss of two young men in what was described as a deeply unfortunate and somber event.
