On a spring evening in Inkster, Michigan, the rhythm of a basketball game was shattered by the sudden eruption of gunfire. It was May 24, 2021, and 31-year-old Chris Knox, a Black male, was enjoying a game with three other individuals near the intersection of Rosewood Street and Center Drive. An unidentified assailant abruptly emerged from between the houses, opened fire on the group, and then vanished as quickly as they had appeared.
The chaotic scene left two men, including Knox, dead and two others in critical condition.
The Inkster Police Department, along with the Michigan State Police, Dearborn Heights Police, and the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, descended on the neighborhood to begin the arduous task of piecing together what had happened. The brazen nature of the ambush, which occurred at approximately 7:52 p.m., sent a shockwave through the community. The motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, and investigators were left with the daunting challenge of tracking down a suspect who had fled on foot.
In the weeks that followed, the investigation into Chris Knox's murder continued, but no arrests were made. In an effort to generate leads, authorities announced a cash reward of up to $2,500 for any information that would lead to the identification and arrest of the person or persons responsible for the senseless violence.
