On a summer afternoon in Flint Township, Michigan, the life of 21-year-old Jacari La'Vuan Roberts was tragically cut short. On June 16, 2021, at approximately 4 p.m., Roberts, a Black male, was shot outside an apartment building at the Hunters Ridge Apartments on Ridgecliff Drive. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and Roberts was quickly transported to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
The initial investigation by the Flint Township Police
Department revealed that the individual responsible for the shooting had fled the scene immediately after the incident. For several weeks, the suspect remained at large, prompting an intensive search by law enforcement. The community was left in a state of shock and grief, with friends and family remembering Roberts for his vibrant and fearless personality and the love he shared with those around him.
The investigation led authorities to 25-year-old Ziare Thomas, a resident of Flint. On July 9, 2021, Thomas was arrested and subsequently arraigned on multiple felony charges, including open murder, firearm possession by a felon, and ammunition possession by a felon. Following his arrest, Thomas was held without bond at the Genesee County Jail. The legal proceedings concluded with Thomas being convicted for the murder of Jacari Roberts. He was sentenced to a minimum of a decade in prison for his role in the fatal shooting.
