On a tragic afternoon in Lansing, Michigan, the life of 46-year-old Michelle Marie Roper was cut short in a violent act that also claimed the life of her daughter. On September 16, 2021, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal shooting that sent shockwaves through the community. The incident unfolded when Brion Reynolds arrived at the home to pick up the children he shared with Roper's daughter, Alexis Brown. An argument between Reynolds and Brown quickly turned deadly.
As Brown was moving car seats, Reynolds shot her. She managed to run back into the house, warning her mother that she had been shot. Reynolds pursued them into the residence and continued firing, fatally wounding both Michelle Roper and Alexis Brown. A six-year-old boy inside the home was also injured by the gunfire but survived. In the chaos that followed, Reynolds fled the scene with two of his and Brown's young children, prompting an Amber Alert. The children were later found safe at a relative's home.
After a manhunt that lasted for four months and involved the U.S. Marshals offering a reward for his capture, Brion Reynolds surrendered to the Lansing police in January 2022. He was charged with two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and weapons offenses. Two other individuals were also implicated in the aftermath of the killings. Gavin Anspach, who had driven Reynolds to the scene, and Reynolds' sister, Monea Reynolds, were both charged with being accessories after the fact to a felony.
In July 2023, Brion Reynolds pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement. He was subsequently sentenced to a prison term of 60 to 80 years, ensuring he will be in his 80s before he is first eligible for parole. During the sentencing, Reynolds offered an apology for his actions. His sister, Monea Reynolds, was sentenced to two years of probation and 90 days in jail for lying to the police during their investigation.
