In Lansing, Michigan, a 37-year-old woman of color named Tameka Susan Jackson, lost her life in a violent encounter on March 13, 2020. A lifelong resident of the city, she was known for her loving heart and ability to bring a smile to the faces of those around her. Tameka worked for several years at Meridian Magnesium Products of America in nearby Eaton Rapids and enjoyed roller skating, music, and reading. Her sudden and tragic death left a profound void in the lives of her family and friends.
The circumstances that led to Tameka's death were rooted in a dispute over a small drug debt. On that Friday night, she and her boyfriend, Augustus Robinson, were at their residence on Ionia Street when two men, Rodolfo Alvarez and John William Kennedy, forced their way into the home to collect money owed to them. During the ensuing confrontation, an argument broke out, and Kennedy fatally shot Tameka multiple times. Robinson was also critically injured in the attack.
Following an investigation into the deadly home invasion, both John William Kennedy and Rodolfo Alvarez were apprehended and faced legal proceedings. Kennedy, identified as the shooter, ultimately pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and assault with intent to murder. In 2021, he was sentenced to serve 35 to 75 years in prison for his role in Tameka's death and the assault on her boyfriend.
Rodolfo Alvarez, who acted as an accomplice, was also charged with murder and assault. His legal journey was more prolonged, with a jury in November 2023 convicting him on a weapons charge but failing to reach a verdict on the more serious counts. Eventually, Alvarez entered a no-contest plea to a charge of manslaughter as a fourth-time habitual offender. He was subsequently sentenced to a prison term of 13 to 50 years. The resolution of the criminal cases brought a measure of closure to a case that highlighted the devastating impact of violence on a community.
