On a summer morning in Pittsburgh's Larimer neighborhood, the life of 18-year-old Jaymerie Washington, a Black male, was cut short by gunfire. On July 18, 2017, at approximately 10:20 a.m., Washington and another man, 41-year-old Terrell Wright, were shot and killed outside an apartment complex on Auburn Street. The city's ShotSpotter system, a network of acoustic sensors designed to detect and locate gunshots, registered at least five rounds fired at the scene.
When police and paramedics arrived, they found both Washington and Wright deceased.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting brought a wave of grief and shock to the community. Family members of the victims gathered at the scene, their anguish palpable as they sought answers in the face of the sudden violence. Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing the succession of gunshots that ended the two men's lives. Investigators began their work, cordoning off the area and looking for any evidence that might lead to a suspect. A black Cadillac Escalade was towed from the scene in connection with the investigation.
