In the winter of 2021, the life of 33-year-old Melissa Nicole Murray, a female from Lansing, Michigan, was tragically cut short. On the night of February 1st, stretching into the early hours of February 2nd, a violent crime unfolded that would later shock the local community. Cory Dean Coddington, a 40-year-old man, entered a residence on Mahlon Street in Lansing where Melissa was present. Inside the house, Coddington allegedly shot her in the head with a long gun.
Following the fatal shooting, Coddington, with the assistance of an accomplice named Daniel Lawrence Dutton, took measures to conceal the crime. They removed Melissa's body, along with the couch she had been sitting on, from the home. The two men then transported her remains to Isabella County. In a remote location, they burned and buried her body in an attempt to hide all evidence of the murder. The investigation into Melissa's disappearance began after her family reported her missing on February 28, 2021. The Lansing Police Department also received an anonymous tip about a woman being killed at the Mahlon Street address.
A crucial piece of evidence in the investigation came from a GPS tether that Coddington was wearing at the time of the murder. The data from the electronic monitoring device placed him at the Mahlon Street house during the time of the shooting and later at the burial site in Isabella County. This technological evidence proved instrumental in locating Melissa's remains on March 24, 2021. Investigators also discovered a piece of a human skull at the Mahlon Street home, which was later confirmed to be a match to Melissa's remains.
Cory Dean Coddington was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder and felony firearm possession. In a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. The terms of the plea deal set his minimum sentence at 20 years in prison. An Ingham County Circuit Judge sentenced him to a term of 20 to 60 years in prison. His accomplice, Daniel Lawrence Dutton, was charged as an accessory after the fact for his role in helping to dispose of Melissa's body. Dutton received a sentence of probation for lying during a violent crime investigation. The case against Coddington was built heavily on circumstantial evidence, with the GPS data and witness testimonies playing a significant role in securing his conviction, bringing a measure of justice for Melissa and her family.
