In the winter of 2021, the life of 24-year-old Katelyn Marie Smith, a White/Caucasian female from Lansing, Michigan, was tragically cut short. On February 14, 2021, police responded to a call at the Lansing Park Terrace housing complex, where they discovered Katelyn with a fatal gunshot wound to her face. At the time of her death, Katelyn was a devoted mother to two young children and was also 14 weeks pregnant.
Present at the scene was her boyfriend, Michael Sczepanski, who was found
holding a gun. Initially, he claimed that Katelyn had taken her own life. However, investigators quickly grew suspicious due to inconsistencies in his account of the events. A pathologist's report later confirmed their doubts, indicating that the gun barrel was at least 12 to 18 inches away from Katelyn's face when it was discharged, making a self-inflicted wound unlikely.
As the investigation continued, Sczepanski's story changed. He then alleged that the shooting was an accident, stating that he had been playing with the firearm when it unintentionally went off, striking Katelyn as she walked into the room. Despite this claim, authorities proceeded to charge him with open murder and felony firearm possession.
In October 2022, the legal proceedings came to a resolution. Michael Sczepanski entered into a plea agreement, pleading guilty to the charge of second-degree murder. The agreement stipulated a minimum prison sentence of 12 years. This plea was accepted after both the prosecution and the defense acknowledged that while the evidence did not definitively prove an intent to kill, it clearly demonstrated that Sczepanski had acted in a manner that created a high risk of death or great bodily harm. The conclusion of the court case brought a measure of closure to Katelyn's grieving family.
