In the winter of 1981, the city of Lansing, Michigan, was unsettled by a series of violent crimes that targeted elderly women. On November 30th of that year, 79-year-old Denise Swanson became a victim in this string of brutal attacks. Her life was tragically cut short, leaving a community in fear and a family in mourning.
The investigation into Swanson's death was part of a larger inquiry into several rapes and strangulations that had been occurring in the Lansing area.
Authorities soon focused their attention on a suspect named Michael Darnell Harris. Harris was apprehended on December 7, 1982, initially for an attack on another woman. However, his arrest quickly linked him to a number of other violent crimes, including the murder of Denise Swanson.
Following his arrest, Harris was charged with Swanson's murder. His trial for her death took place in 1983, where the prosecution presented evidence connecting him to the crime. On November 3rd of that year, a jury found Michael Darnell Harris guilty of the murder of Denise Swanson. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a legal conclusion to the tragic case that had shaken the Lansing community.
