On a cold February day in 1988, Lansing, Michigan, lost a dedicated public servant. Julie A. Engelhardt, a 34-year-old officer with the Lansing Police Department, was tragically killed in the line of duty on February 12th. A veteran of the force for 14 years, Engelhardt was the first female officer in the city's history to be slain while serving her community.
The fatal encounter began with a seemingly minor incident when two young boys reported that a man had stolen their sled. Officer Engelhardt responded to the call near 624 E. Holmes Road. Upon confronting the suspect, the situation escalated dramatically. The man, armed with a. 22 caliber rifle, opened fire on Officer Engelhardt, fatally wounding her. Despite her grave injuries, she managed to return fire, wounding the suspect before succumbing to her injuries.
The man responsible for Officer Engelhardt's death was apprehended at the scene. In the subsequent legal proceedings, he was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Following this verdict, he was committed to a mental institution for treatment. However, his time in the facility was not lifelong; he was released in 1992, four years after the death of Officer Engelhardt. Julie A. Engelhardt was survived by her two sisters.
