John Raymond Sougstad, a 57-year-old Caucasian man, died on September 24, 2021, in a violent encounter at his home in Windsor Township, a community near Lansing, Michigan. A respected figure in his community, known for his work in special education and psychology, his life was cut short in a triple homicide that also claimed the lives of his 65-year-old wife, Barbara Sougstad, and their 29-year-old son, Ryan Sougstad.
The tragedy unfolded on a Friday evening when neighbors were alerted by the sounds of gunshots and screaming coming from the Sougstad residence. A young girl, Ryan's daughter, fled the home to a neighbor's house, injured and covered in blood. When Eaton County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered the bodies of John, Barbara, and Ryan inside the home. The scene was described as horrific; all three victims had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Further investigation revealed that John Sougstad had been shot four times and stabbed eleven times. His son Ryan was shot and stabbed four times, and his wife Barbara was shot once in the back.
The investigation quickly centered on John's younger son, Daniel Sougstad, who was 23 at the time and lived at the family home. He was not present when authorities arrived, prompting a search. Daniel was apprehended during a traffic stop the following morning. Reports indicated that he had blood on his pants and glasses, and a loaded shotgun was found in his vehicle. The shells from the shotgun were a match to those discovered at the crime scene.
Daniel Sougstad was arrested and subsequently charged with three counts of open murder and felony firearm charges. He was held without bond. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in January 2022, a judge ruled there was enough evidence for him to stand trial for the killings of his parents and brother. However, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn due to the suspect's mental health. After evaluations, he was reportedly found incompetent to stand trial. In September 2023, the murder charges against Daniel Sougstad were dismissed, and he was committed for mental health treatment. The charges could potentially be refiled in the future if he is ever deemed competent.
