In the late summer of 2022, the Ypsilanti community was shaken by the violent death of 17-year-old Deshawn Lamar Patterson. On August 20, 2022, the young man's life was cut short by gunfire. Born on May 12, 2005, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Patterson was a local youth whose sudden passing prompted an outpouring of grief and a demand for answers.
The investigation into Patterson's death quickly focused on another teenager.
Kawaun Deshawn Robinson, also 17 years old at the time, was identified as the suspect in the fatal shooting. In a notable turn of events, Robinson chose to turn himself in to the authorities. His surrender was reportedly facilitated by a violence interrupter, a community member trained to de-escalate conflicts and prevent further violence.
Following his surrender, Robinson was formally charged in connection with Patterson's death. On August 22, 2022, he was arraigned on one count of open murder. This charge allows prosecutors the flexibility to later specify the degree of murder as the case progresses through the legal system. The case then moved to the courts to determine the outcome of the tragic encounter that ended one young life and irrevocably altered another.
