Patrolman James H. Culpepper, a 32-year-old officer with the Meridian Police Department in Mississippi, tragically lost his life on October 10, 1910. The incident occurred while he was attempting to arrest a man involved in illegal gambling. During the arrest, the suspect resisted and shot Patrolman Culpepper. Despite being mortally wounded, Patrolman Culpepper managed to return fire, killing his assailant.
