In the early evening of May 29, 2019, a tragic event unfolded in Meridian, Mississippi, that claimed the life of 27-year-old Talimon Edwards, a Black male. Edwards and another man, Elbert Earl Carpenter Jr., were discovered inside a vehicle at the intersection of 22nd Street and Royal Road, both having succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds. The two men were found in the front seats of the car, and investigators determined they had been shot from the back seat of the vehicle in what was described as a non-random act of violence. Authorities suggested the motive may have been an attempted robbery and that the victims and their assailant or assailants likely knew each other.
The ensuing investigation by the Meridian Police Department led to a series of arrests in connection with the double homicide. Initially, two individuals were taken into custody, but the investigation quickly expanded as it became clear more people were involved. Law enforcement officials utilized information from the public and video evidence to piece together the events of that fatal evening. This led to the apprehension of Myson Mosley, Tavion Radcliff, and Jyquan Radcliff, who were all subsequently charged with capital murder.
Further developments in the case saw two more suspects, Cedric Rodgers and Jayvion Smith, also facing two counts of capital murder each for their alleged roles in the deaths of Edwards and Carpenter. Smith was apprehended by U.S. Marshals and was also facing a separate murder charge for a different incident. The investigation indicated that the slayings were the result of an ongoing dispute and were not believed to be gang-related. The arrests brought a measure of progress in a case that was part of a notable increase in homicides for Meridian and the surrounding Lauderdale County in 2019.
