In the late hours of a Monday night in Meridian, Mississippi, a well-known and beloved member of the downtown community, Bobby Ray Armstrong, met a tragic and violent end. The 55-year-old man, who was deaf and mute, was discovered shot multiple times in the back in the 600 block of 33rd Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before midnight on September 9, 2014. Those who knew him described him as a 'real sweet guy' who wouldn't hurt anyone, often doing yard work or cleaning houses for people in the area.
The news of his death sent ripples through the community, prompting friends and family to gather for a candlelight vigil in Dumont Plaza later that week. Over 100 people attended to remember the man they called 'Baba.' His sister recalled him as a loving and compassionate person who always greeted family members with a hug. Just the Sunday before his death, Armstrong had attended a service at the Jubilee Mennonite Church, a rare occasion that his family felt was special.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Meridian Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to arrests. Jacoby Dixon, 20, also of Meridian, was taken into custody and charged with murder. He was held in the Lauderdale Detention Facility with no bond. Another individual, Omeika Brown, was also arrested and charged with accessory after the fact in connection with Armstrong's death.
While authorities did not immediately release a motive for the shooting, the case was set to be presented to the next available grand jury. The community, though shaken, drew strength from their faith as they mourned the loss of a man known for his kindness and willingness to help others.
