On December 26, 2023, 30-year-old Captain Justin James Whipps was fatally shot in the parking lot of the East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Meridian, Mississippi. The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. during an altercation between Whipps and fellow correctional officer, 33-year-old Caboris McAfee. Both officers were on duty at the time.
