In the quiet, unincorporated community of Russell, just outside of Meridian, Mississippi, a tragic event unfolded on May 4, 2021, ending the life of 65-year-old William Jerry Sumrall. A White male, Mr. Sumrall was a truck driver for Howard Industries and was known for his love of the outdoors, particularly fishing and hunting. He was a father and a grandfather, cherished by his family who would remember him as a man of Christian faith.

On that Tuesday, the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office received a call about a suspicious vehicle, which was quickly followed by a more alarming report of an unresponsive man bleeding at the edge of a driveway. When deputies arrived at the residence, they found William Sumrall deceased. The investigation suggested that the fatal incident occurred on the back porch of the house he shared with his ex-wife, Frankie Leanne Sumrall. It appeared that after being shot, Mr. Sumrall had managed to run approximately 30 yards before he collapsed.

Upon discovering Mr. Sumrall, deputies attempted to make contact with 56-year-old Frankie Sumrall, who was inside the home. When their attempts to reach her were unsuccessful, they made a forced entry. Inside the bedroom, they found her deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation by the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office led them to conclude that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide. Authorities believe that Frankie Sumrall shot her ex-husband before taking her own life. It was noted by the sheriff that despite their divorce, the couple had continued to live together. No other suspects were identified, and no arrests were made in connection with the deaths. The case highlighted the devastating potential of domestic turmoil and mental health crises, leaving a family to mourn the profound loss of two lives.
