Michael Henry "Mickey" Schwerner, a 24-year-old civil rights activist, was murdered on June 21, 1964, in Philadelphia, Mississippi. Schwerner, along with fellow activists James Chaney and Andrew Goodman, was working with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) to promote voting registration among African Americans in Mississippi. Their efforts were part of the larger "Freedom Summer" campaign aimed at challenging the systemic disenfranchisement of black voters in the South.
