In the winter of 2023, a violent altercation in Philadelphia, Mississippi, tragically cut short the life of 26-year-old Lamontae Salley of Eupora. On the morning of Friday, December 8th, Philadelphia Police were dispatched to a residence on Bay Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival around 9:40 a.m., officers discovered a chaotic scene with two men suffering from gunshot wounds.
Salley had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A second man at the home was found to have been shot in the leg. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. The initial investigation suggested that the shooting was the result of a physical altercation between the two men who were shot.
In connection with the fatal shooting, authorities arrested 23-year-old Jatarrius M. Kelly of Philadelphia. He was subsequently charged with 1st degree murder for his alleged role in Lamontae Salley's death. Following his arrest, Kelly was booked into the Winston-Choctaw County Detention Center. The investigation into the incident remained ongoing.
