Death by Force

Luther Jackson, a 27-year-old African-American Korean War veteran, was tragically killed on October 25, 1959, in Philadelphia, Mississippi. The incident occurred during a traffic stop conducted by Philadelphia Police Department Officer Lawrence Rainey. According to contemporaneous newspaper articles, Jackson was in a parked car on Pine Street with a companion when Rainey approached them. Rainey ordered Jackson and his companion to exit the vehicle.
