Glen Victor Agee, a 31-year-old male Jackson Police Department officer, was shot and killed in the line of duty on Friday, August 6, 2010. On that day, Agee and another officer had arrested a man identified as 24-year-old Latwan Smith for aggravated assault and domestic violence. Smith had allegedly threatened his girlfriend with a loaded gun at a residence in South Jackson earlier that day. While being transported to the Hinds County Detention Center, Smith complained of having trouble breathing. In response, one of the officers lowered a rear window of the patrol car.
Despite being handcuffed behind his back and secured by a seatbelt, Smith managed to maneuver his hands in front of his body, reach outside the partially opened window, and open the car door when the vehicle stopped at a red light. He then fled into a nearby wooded area with both officers in pursuit. Officer Agee followed Smith into the woods and engaged in a struggle with him in the water of a nearby canal. During the altercation, Smith was able to disarm Officer Agee, shooting him twice in the face with his own service weapon. Smith then fled the scene on foot.
A search involving multiple agencies and a helicopter was launched, and Smith was apprehended approximately 45 minutes later. Officer Agee was found shortly after the shooting and was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The following day, a volunteer with a metal detector found Agee's 9mm Glock 17 service revolver submerged in the mud of a creek bed near where his body was discovered. In August 2012, Latwan Smith pleaded guilty to the murder of Officer Glen Agee and was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with 10 years suspended. At the time of his death, Officer Agee had been with the Jackson Police Department for only two months, having previously served with the Jackson State University Police Department and the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
