On a festive day in Jackson, Mississippi, the life of 27-year-old Joshua Spann was cut short. On March 25, 2023, during the annual Hal's St. Paddy's Day Parade, Spann, a male volunteer firefighter, was with friends near Jefferson Street when they witnessed a troubling scene. A man, later identified as Jordan Cummins, was reportedly assaulting his girlfriend, Jenny Lukens, in a parked vehicle.
Spann and his friends decided to intervene in an attempt to help the woman.
The situation quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation. As Spann and others approached Cummins' car to stop the assault, an altercation broke out. Cummins, who was 29 years old, retrieved a weapon and opened fire into the group of good Samaritans. Joshua Spann was struck by the gunfire and fatally wounded. In the chaos, a second individual, 23-year-old Jubilee Simpkins, who had remained in the back of a friend's truck, was also hit and killed by the gunfire. Following the shooting, Cummins and his girlfriend fled the scene.
The suspect, Jordan Cummins of Florence, did not remain at large for long. He surrendered to Rankin County deputies later that same afternoon and was subsequently taken into the custody of the Capitol Police. He was charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Joshua Spann and Jubilee Simpkins. During his initial court appearance, Cummins claimed he had acted in self-defense, alleging that Spann had drawn a gun on him. However, his plea for bond was denied. The case against him was strengthened by a 'very disturbing' video that surfaced, seemingly recorded by Cummins himself from the Raymond Detention Center, in which he appeared to brag about the killings.
The legal process culminated in a jury trial in June 2024. Prosecutors presented a case portraying Cummins as a violent aggressor who murdered two people after they tried to stop him from beating his girlfriend. The defense maintained that Cummins's actions were in self-defense. After six days of testimony and evidence, the Hinds County jury found Jordan Cummins guilty of two counts of first-degree murder on June 19, 2024. Subsequently, he was sentenced to serve two concurrent life sentences in prison.
