In the winter of 2014, a domestic dispute in Jackson, Mississippi, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the lives of a father and his mother. On the evening of Wednesday, January 29, 2014, arguments erupted between 49-year-old Tyrone Liddell Sr. and his 20-year-old son, Tyrone Liddell Jr. The heated exchange ended in a burst of gunfire that left Tyrone Liddell Sr.
and his 74-year-old mother, Bertha Lee Liddell, dead.
The following morning, on Thursday, January 30, 2014, the bodies were discovered. Tyrone Liddell Sr. was found lying in the front yard of the Voorhees Avenue home, while his mother was found deceased inside the residence. Both victims had been shot multiple times. Investigators determined that a. 40-caliber weapon was used in the killings, though the firearm itself was not immediately recovered. A witness outside the family reported hearing the argument between the father and son the night the shootings were believed to have occurred.
With the assistance of Tyrone Liddell Jr.'s mother, law enforcement located and arrested him in a vehicle in Jackson on Thursday night. He was subsequently charged with two counts of murder. Despite denying his involvement as he was escorted from the courthouse, Tyrone Liddell Jr. was held without bond. He was considered the sole suspect in the double homicide.
The legal proceedings that followed were delayed for over eight years as the defendant underwent evaluation and treatment at the State Hospital. Ultimately, in September 2022, then 29-year-old Tyrone Liddell Jr. pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and manslaughter for the deaths of his father and grandmother. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to serve 30 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections without the possibility of early release.
