On a late September evening in Biloxi, Mississippi, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 32-year-old Jeremy Lowery. The male victim was fatally shot in the face outside the apartment he shared with his girlfriend and her children on Auguste Court. The incident, which occurred on September 29, 2015, followed a heated argument between Lowery and his girlfriend.
The individual arrested in connection with the shooting was his girlfriend's 16-year-old son, Treylan 'Trey' Hunter. At the time, Hunter was a wide receiver for the Biloxi High School football team. According to police reports, Hunter told investigators he was tired of the ongoing conflict between his mother and Lowery. During their final altercation, which began inside their home and spilled outside into a physical fight, Hunter retrieved a. 22-caliber bolt-action rifle. He stated that he warned Lowery to stop hurting his mother before firing the single shot.
Following the shooting, Hunter's mother, Desiree Lindsey, made a frantic call to the police. The phone was passed to a younger son and then to Hunter, who admitted to the shooting. Lowery was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries approximately an hour later.
Hunter was charged with murder as an adult and was held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center. He was later released on a $100,000 bond. His case was bound over to a grand jury. In July 2017, Treylan Hunter pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of manslaughter. A judge subsequently sentenced him to 20 years in prison, with 15 of those years to be served and the remaining five years suspended, to be followed by five years of post-release supervision.
