On a September night in 2021, a well-known Gulfport barber and father of three, Randy Ameer Johnson, a 41-year-old Black male, visited the Golden Nugget casino in Biloxi to celebrate a friend's birthday. His life was cut short in a violent encounter that began with a look and escalated to a fatal shooting on the bustling casino floor. The man responsible, Jereme Lamond Jones, a 30-year-old former University of South Alabama wide receiver from Mobile, Alabama, is now serving a life sentence for the murder.

The evening of September 18th took a dark turn when Jones, who was a stranger to Johnson, approached him at a casino bar. According to testimony, Jones seemed to take offense at the way Johnson was looking at him and asked if he wanted 'to take it outside.' The two men went to the parking garage, where a physical fight broke out. Surveillance footage showed Johnson throwing the first two punches. During the scuffle, a gun and holster fell from Jones's waistband. Upon seeing the weapon, Johnson, who was unarmed, ran back into the casino, attempting to get away.

What followed was a terrifying chase through the gaming floor, captured in detail by the casino's security cameras. Jones pursued Johnson, who ran around gaming tables and through the crowd of patrons in a desperate attempt to escape. Johnson eventually tripped and fell. Jones caught up to him, stood over him, and shot him ten times at close range as he lay on the ground with his hands in the air. Prosecutors would later describe the brutal killing as an 'execution.' After the shooting, Jones kicked Johnson in the face before walking out of the casino.

Police responded to multiple 911 calls about the shooting just after 12:30 a.m. and found Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers apprehended Jones, who was armed with a pistol, near the Biloxi Bay Bridge as he tried to flee. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. The evidence against him, particularly the clear and graphic surveillance video, was overwhelming. A jury deliberated for only 46 minutes before finding him guilty. Jereme Lamond Jones was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. An appeal of his conviction was later denied.
