In the late summer of 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace of a Biloxi, Mississippi apartment complex, tragically ending the life of 20-year-old Damari Daniels, a Black male. On the evening of August 26th, police responded to reports of a shooting at the McDonnell Avenue Apartments. Upon arrival, they discovered Daniels in the parking lot, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another young man, 22-year-old Shadavion Smith, was also found to have been shot and was transported to a New Orleans hospital with serious injuries.
The Biloxi Police Department quickly launched an intensive investigation, utilizing surveillance footage and witness statements to identify the individuals responsible for the violent encounter. Their efforts led to a swift breakthrough. Just two days after the fatal shooting, on August 28th, authorities located and arrested two suspects during a traffic stop on the Interstate 10 bridge. The individuals taken into custody were 19-year-old Rashod Omrion Jerome Harris of Biloxi and 17-year-old Harry Lavern Hillard of Gulfport. Both were initially charged with capital murder and aggravated assault. As the investigation deepened, police also sought another person for accessory after the fact to capital murder, indicating the potential for a wider conspiracy surrounding the events of that night.
The legal process moved forward, culminating in convictions for both Harris and Hillard. Harris entered a guilty plea on July 24, 2025, and Hillard followed suit on October 13, 2025. In October 2025, both men were sentenced for second-degree murder and aggravated assault. A judge sentenced each of them to 58 years in prison, with 28 of those years to be served without the possibility of parole or early release. Following their prison terms, they will be subject to 10 years of post-release supervision.
During the sentencing, the court heard from the family of Damari Daniels, who submitted a letter expressing their profound grief. They also conveyed a message of hope that the defendants would seek redemption and faith during their time in prison. The judge presiding over the case remarked on the tragic and prevalent nature of gun violence among young people in the community. The District Attorney's office echoed these sentiments, highlighting the devastating impact of such senseless acts on families and the community at large, noting that one young life was lost while two others would now spend a significant portion of their lives behind bars.
