In the early winter of 2016, the life of 22-year-old Adrian Seals was cut short on a street in Meridian, Mississippi. On the evening of Monday, December 5th, Seals was at the intersection of 13th Avenue and 20th Street when he was fatally shot. The incident added another name to the city's growing list of homicides for the year.

In the days that followed the shooting, the Meridian Police Department identified a suspect, Jemarcus Shaquille Grace, also of Meridian. An investigation into the events leading up to Seals' death suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence but rather the tragic culmination of an altercation between the two men. While the specific details of their dispute remained unclear to investigators, the confrontation escalated to the point where a firearm was drawn and used.

Following the identification of Grace as the primary suspect, he turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Adrian Seals. In a swift legal move, Grace waived his right to a preliminary hearing. This decision moved the case forward, allowing it to be presented to a Lauderdale County grand jury for consideration of an indictment. Around the same time, it was noted that Grace was also to be transferred to the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections due to a violation of his probation, a matter separate from the murder charge. The case of Adrian Seals' death was then left in the hands of the grand jury, with the community awaiting a decision on whether the man accused of ending his life would face a trial.
