On a Thursday night in February 2017, a game of dominoes at the Westwood Apartments on Robinson Road in Jackson, Mississippi, turned into a scene of violence that would leave four young men dead. Inside one of the units, a group of friends was interrupted when several men burst in, brandishing guns and demanding their possessions.
The occupants of the apartment, who were also armed, chose to defend themselves rather than submit to the robbery.
An exchange of gunfire erupted, and in the chaos, 21-year-old Jacarin Robinson, one of the intruders, was shot in the head and died at the scene. He was a young Black man. Another alleged robber, 23-year-old Jessie Kelly, was also shot. An accomplice drove Kelly to Merit Health, but he succumbed to his injuries and died early the next morning.
The gunfight also claimed the lives of two of the robbery victims. Dominique Garrett, 23, died inside the apartment. His 25-year-old brother, Marquis Garrett, was critically wounded and transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he later died, becoming the fourth fatality of the incident.
In the aftermath, Jackson police recovered several firearms from the apartment. They initially sought a man named Carl Harper, 24, for questioning. Harper turned himself in but was subsequently released. Authorities also mentioned a third accomplice in the robbery who was not identified. The incident was recorded as the city's 8th, 9th, and 10th homicide investigations of that year.
