In the line of duty, 27-year-old Jackson police officer Brian Ronald Kinsey, a White/Caucasian male, was fatally shot on October 22, 1997. Officer Kinsey, a five-year veteran of the department, was responding to a domestic disturbance call with his rookie partner.
Upon their arrival and as Kinsey approached the residence, he was shot with a shotgun. After he fell to the ground, the gunman approached him and shot him again.
His partner returned fire but did not hit the suspect, who then retreated inside the home and barricaded himself.
A two-hour standoff with police ensued. Officers eventually used tear gas to force the suspect out of the house. When the suspect emerged and aimed his weapon at the officers, he was shot and killed by the authorities.
Officer Kinsey was a respected member of the force, having received multiple honors for his service. He was survived by his wife and daughter.
