On a summer morning in the Woolmarket community near Biloxi, Mississippi, a volatile domestic situation turned deadly, leaving a young man dead in the street. Jeremy Ryan Nilges, a 28-year-old male, was shot and killed on July 6, 2017. His death was the culmination of a troubled relationship with his ex-girlfriend, who was quickly identified as the suspect.
The woman, 23-year-old Angeline Olivia Brossett, was arrested on the day of the shooting. The incident unfolded on Parker's Creek Road, where Brossett lived. Nilges had gone to her home that morning, leading to a confrontation. Despite a history of domestic disputes that had led to arrests for both individuals, the encounter escalated. Brossett's mother had called 911 to report Nilges for trespassing, as he was violating a protective order.
According to testimony from a preliminary hearing, after Nilges was told to leave, he began to walk away from the residence. At that point, Brossett emerged from the house with a stolen 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun. She allegedly fired a couple of warning shots before pursuing Nilges down the street. A security camera from a nearby business captured the tragic events as Brossett ran after Nilges, fired the fatal shot, and he fell to the ground. When police arrived, they found Nilges in the middle of the road with a gunshot wound to his upper right chest. Brossett was sitting near his body.
Initially, Brossett told investigators that she had thrown the gun into a nearby creek, but a search of the area came up empty. The firearm was later discovered hidden inside the bathroom of her home. Based on the evidence and witness statements, Angeline Olivia Brossett was arrested and charged with manslaughter and possession of a stolen firearm. A judge set her bond at a total of $110,000, and the case was bound over to a grand jury. The outcome of the grand jury's decision and any subsequent trial or plea agreement have not been publicly reported in the years following the incident.
