In the summer of 2017, the life of 23-year-old Carol Ann McClellan Sharp was cut short in her Tupelo, Mississippi, apartment. Born on June 5, 1994, in Plant City, Florida, she had moved to Tupelo in 2010. Friends and family knew her as a creative individual with a passion for fishing and sketching graphic art. In May 2014, she married James R. Sharp, and to those who knew them, the couple appeared to be happy and devoted to one another.
The tragic events unfolded on the night of August
5, 2017, when James Sharp placed a 911 call reporting that his wife had been shot. When police arrived at their Kirkwood Apartments home on Milford Street, they found Carol with a single gunshot wound to her head. She was barely conscious and was rushed to the North Mississippi Medical Center. Initially, her husband claimed that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, an accident. However, investigators at the scene noted inconsistencies in his story.
Carol Ann Sharp succumbed to her injuries and passed away on the morning of August 6, 2017, nearly nine hours after being shot. Following her death, the investigation quickly shifted focus to her husband. Detectives did not believe the wound was the result of an accident or a suicide attempt. James was arrested and initially charged with aggravated domestic assault, but after his wife's death, the charge was upgraded to first-degree murder. The authorities stated that the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute. While James later confessed to pulling the trigger, he maintained that it was accidental.
Initially, James Sharp's bond was set at $2 million. This was later reduced to $100,000, which he posted, allowing for his release from jail while awaiting trial. On February 25, 2019, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder. This plea deal resulted in a 25-year prison sentence. As part of his sentence, he was also ordered to pay restitution and court costs. He is currently incarcerated at the Marion-Walthall County Regional Correctional Facility.
