In the quiet neighborhood of Haven Acres in Tupelo, Mississippi, a young life was tragically cut short on the evening of January 28, 2020. Tiara Dancer, a 17-year-old female, was an unfortunate victim of a violent altercation that erupted on Meadow Drive. She had recently graduated early from Tupelo High School, a promising future stretching out before her.
That fateful night, a physical fight between two men escalated into gunfire.
In the chaos that ensued, a stray bullet struck Tiara, who was merely a bystander to the conflict. Emergency services were called to the scene, but her injuries proved fatal, and she was pronounced dead right there on Meadow Drive. The senseless act of violence left a community in mourning and a family devastated by the sudden loss of a young woman just beginning her adult life.
The Tupelo Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led to the arrest of Jacoby Samaji O'Neal, a 20-year-old from Belden. In October 2021, O'Neal pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for his role in the death of Tiara Dancer. He admitted to firing the shots during the altercation that ultimately led to her death.
As a result of his guilty plea, the Lee County Circuit Court sentenced Jacoby Samaji O'Neal to 40 years in prison, with five of those years suspended. The court stipulated that he must serve the full 35 years of his sentence. O'Neal also faced and pleaded guilty to other unrelated felony charges in Pontotoc and Monroe counties. While the legal proceedings brought a measure of justice, it could never undo the tragic loss of Tiara Dancer, a young woman whose life was stolen in a moment of senseless violence.
