In the quiet community of Prairie, Mississippi, the life of 16-year-old Denasia Monae McGregory was tragically cut short on May 22, 2023. A student at Houston High School, Denasia was described by family and friends as a compassionate and kind-hearted individual who enjoyed playing video games and spending time with her loved ones. Her sudden and violent death left an irreplaceable void in the lives of those who knew and cherished her.
The harrowing discovery was made in the early
morning hours in a daycare parking lot in Tupelo, Mississippi. Law enforcement responded to a welfare check and found Denasia's body in the trunk of a car. The initial investigation quickly pointed to a homicide, sending shockwaves through the local community. The Lee County Coroner's Office officially identified the victim, and her body was sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy, which later revealed she had been a victim of gun violence.
The investigation into Denasia's death rapidly progressed, leading law enforcement to 19-year-old Labrandon Tumblin of Aberdeen. Evidence suggested that the murder occurred in Clay County before her body was transported to Tupelo. Following the discovery, Tumblin allegedly barricaded himself inside a nearby house, holding occupants hostage. After negotiations with the Tupelo Police Department's SWAT unit, he surrendered to authorities.
Initially taken into custody on a kidnapping charge by the Tupelo Police Department, Tumblin was later transferred to the Clay County Jail as the investigation pointed to the homicide occurring within their jurisdiction.
