In the summer of 2021, the life of 21-year-old Jessica Pannell, a bright and beloved Black female from Tupelo, Mississippi, was tragically cut short. On the night of July 24th, Pannell was one of three young adults killed in a hail of gunfire at a party on Maynard Street. The other victims were 21-year-old Norahs Coleman and 22-year-old Robben Wilson.
The incident, which quickly turned a joyous gathering into a scene of chaos and sorrow, marked one of the deadliest weekends in Tupelo's recent history. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement faced challenges in gathering information, as potential witnesses were hesitant to come forward.
The investigation into the triple homicide led to the identification of four suspects. Within days of the shooting, authorities apprehended Javion Clifton and Shamar Carroll. A third suspect, Taquon Arnez Garth, was arrested by U.S. Marshals shortly after. The fourth and final suspect, Jaylen Antwan Wells, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was captured in Albany, New York, in December 2021 and extradited back to Mississippi. All four individuals were initially charged with three counts of capital murder. Wells was subsequently denied bond.
In September 2023, two of the men charged in connection with the murders accepted plea deals. Shamar Carroll pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to capital murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with five years suspended. Javion Clifton pleaded guilty to three counts of culpable negligent manslaughter and received a 20-year sentence for each count, with the sentences for two of the counts being suspended and to be served consecutively. As part of their plea agreements, both Carroll and Clifton agreed to testify against the remaining two defendants, Jaylen Antwan Wells and Taquon Arnez Garth, who are still awaiting trial on capital murder charges.
