In the fall of 2017, the life of 46-year-old Donnikia Clark, a male resident of Meridian, Mississippi, was tragically cut short. On October 7th of that year, Clark was involved in a fatal altercation that resulted in his death from a gunshot wound. The incident unfolded in the front yard of a home on 28th Avenue in Meridian, where an argument preceded the deadly shooting.

The immediate aftermath of the shooting saw law enforcement quickly identify a suspect, Travis Ray Conner. The investigation was aided by Conner's own mother, who, upon hearing the gunshot and finding Clark's body in her yard, immediately implicated her son to the responding officers. An eyewitness to the event also testified to seeing Conner shoot Clark after a heated verbal exchange. Evidence collected at the scene included a 9mm shell casing found near Clark's body. A subsequent search of Conner's bedroom uncovered another 9mm shell casing that was forensically matched to the same weapon used in the killing.

Following the shooting, Conner fled the state, prompting a manhunt that concluded with his arrest in Topeka, Kansas, just days later. He was extradited back to Mississippi to face charges for the murder of Donnikia Clark. His trial was delayed, in part due to the coronavirus pandemic, but eventually took place in Lauderdale County Circuit Court. In October 2022, a jury found Travis Ray Conner guilty of first-degree murder.

Conner's sentencing reflected his violent criminal history. With three prior felony convictions, including armed robbery, he was sentenced as a violent habitual offender. Under Mississippi's three-strikes law, this resulted in an automatic sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The conviction and sentence were later affirmed by the Mississippi Court of Appeals in August 2024, ensuring that justice, though delayed, was ultimately served for the death of Donnikia Clark.
