In the summer of 2016, the community of Meridian, Mississippi, was shaken by the violent and untimely death of a local football hero. Chris Smith, a 26-year-old Black man, was fatally shot on the night of Friday, July 15, 2016. The incident occurred at the Frank Berry Courts apartments on 42nd Avenue, where an altercation escalated to a fatal conclusion. Smith, a former standout wide receiver for Meridian High School and Mississippi State University, was a well-known figure in the area, celebrated for his athletic achievements on the football field.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a person of interest. Meridian police identified 25-year-old Tirale Reed as the primary suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest. Reed was described as a 5-foot-5, 150-pound Black man with tattoos. He was considered armed and dangerous, and authorities appealed to the public for any information regarding his whereabouts, cautioning that anyone found to be harboring him would also face charges. The search for Reed came to an end when he was taken into custody by law enforcement.
Following his arrest, Tirale Reed was formally charged with murder, felony possession of a firearm, and shooting into an occupied dwelling. During his initial court appearance, his bond was set at a combined $255,000 for all charges. The prosecutor in the case argued for a higher bond, citing the serious nature of the crime and alleging that Reed had confessed to the shooting on video. Eyewitness accounts reportedly indicated that Chris Smith had his hands in the air at the time of the shooting, although it was also mentioned that Smith had a gun in his waistband which he had not drawn. Reed’s attorney suggested that self-defense was a factor in the tragic incident. The motive for the murder was still under investigation at the time of Reed's arrest. The death of Chris Smith was mourned by many, including his former coaches and teammates who remembered him as a competitive and hard-working individual who had earned his degree from Mississippi State.
