Her 16-year-old son, Damien Thompson Jr., a male known for his big smile and love of basketball, was supposed to be with friends he trusted on the morning of Saturday, February 3, 2018. Instead, a call about a shooting on Ponderosa Drive marked the beginning of a nightmare for his family. Responding to the call around 10:30 a.m., Gulfport police found Damien with a gunshot wound.
Less than two hours later, he was pronounced dead, leaving behind a family grappling with a loss that was tragically familiar.
The pain for Damien's family was compounded by a haunting sense of history repeating itself. Just five years earlier, in 2013, Damien's father and namesake had been shot and killed on a street just one block north of where his son's life was taken. This devastating coincidence fueled the family's disbelief and suspicion about the circumstances of Damien's death. His grandmother, with whom he and his older brother had lived for most of their lives, and his mother, Catrease Hyde, initially struggled to accept that the shooting was accidental, as a friend of Damien's had claimed. They questioned how a young man so full of life and protective of his family could be gone in an instant.
As the Gulfport Police Department delved into the investigation, a different narrative began to emerge. What was initially feared to be a malicious act was determined to be a tragic accident. Investigators concluded that Damien, along with two other 15-year-old boys, had been filming a video for social media. They were displaying several firearms when a handgun Damien was holding accidentally discharged, firing a single, fatal shot into his chest. The other two teens, in a state of panic, reportedly hid the two handguns, a shotgun, and a rifle they had been using. These weapons were later recovered by law enforcement.
In the aftermath of the tragic incident, the two other teenagers involved were taken into custody. They faced charges of possession of a handgun by a minor and tampering with evidence. The case was slated to be handled by the Youth Court, and the findings of the investigation were to be presented to a grand jury.
