In the final moments of 2021, a New Year's Eve party in Gulfport, Mississippi, became the scene of a tragedy that claimed the life of 23-year-old Corey Dubose and three others. The gathering, which had grown to over 100 people, was shattered by gunfire that erupted following a dispute.
Investigations by the Gulfport Police Department revealed that the mass shooting began with an argument between Corey Dubose and another man, 22-year-old Aubrey Lewis.
The altercation escalated to the point where both men allegedly shot at each other. In the chaotic moments that followed, other individuals in the crowd reportedly drew their weapons, including 9mm handguns and AR-15 style rifles, and began firing. By the time the shooting subsided, Dubose, Lewis, 28-year-old Sedrick McCord, and 52-year-old Nathaniel Harris were fatally wounded, and three other people were injured. Corey Dubose was pronounced dead on January 1, 2022, at Memorial Hospital.
In the wake of the violence, law enforcement launched an extensive investigation, relying heavily on the testimony of over 20 witnesses to piece together the events of that night and identify those involved. The investigation led to the arrest of multiple suspects. While some of the victims and suspects were alleged to have gang-related ties, investigators did not immediately confirm this as a direct motive for the shooting.
Among those taken into custody was Isavian Preston, 23, who was apprehended in Madisonville, Kentucky, on an identity theft charge and awaited extradition to Mississippi to face charges of first and second-degree murder in connection with the Gulfport killings. Other arrests were made in the case, with suspects facing various charges, including second-degree murder. The legal proceedings for the accused began to unfold in the following weeks and months.
