On the evening of December 12, 2021, officers from the Gulfport Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at the French Oaks apartment complex located at 1228 43rd Avenue in Gulfport, Mississippi. The call came in around 5:44 p.m., prompting law enforcement to converge on the scene. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds inside one of the units. The victim was identified as 24-year-old Black male Kevon Edwards.
Despite the response, Edwards succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses at the scene provided crucial details to investigators, stating that they observed two men entering Edwards' apartment shortly before the gunfire erupted. Residents reported hearing three distinct shots ring out from the unit. The investigation revealed that the incident was a targeted act of violence, with bullets also striking the dwelling and a vehicle in the vicinity. The police department immediately launched a homicide investigation, collecting evidence and seeking information from the community to identify the individuals responsible for the fatal shooting.
Subsequent to the investigation, Gulfport Police identified and arrested a suspect in connection with the case. Kameron Samije Erving, who was 16 years old at the time of the report, was taken into custody. Law enforcement officials charged Erving with shooting into a dwelling and shooting into a motor vehicle, felonies linked to the circumstances surrounding Edwards' death. While witnesses had initially reported seeing two men enter the apartment, public reports focused on the arrest of Erving as a primary development in the case. The death of Edwards was later highlighted by community activists during local meetings addressing the surge of gun violence in the area, where his funeral program was displayed alongside others lost to similar tragedies.
