In the spring of 2020, a young man's life was cut short in a burst of violence on a street in Gulfport, Mississippi. Kameron Bettis, a 19-year-old male, was caught in a drive-by shooting that would ultimately prove fatal. The incident unfolded on a Monday afternoon when police were called to investigate reports of shots being fired into an occupied home on Klein Road.
While officers were en route to the scene, Bettis arrived at a local hospital with a serious gunshot wound.
The gravity of his injuries necessitated an airlift to the University of South Alabama hospital in Mobile for more advanced medical care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Kameron Bettis succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led Gulfport police to identify three other teenagers believed to be involved in the incident alongside Bettis. Three 18-year-olds, identified as Michael King, Demetrius Coleman Jr., and Semaj Taylor, were connected to the drive-by shooting. Subsequently, King and Coleman were taken into custody, each facing a charge of a drive-by shooting. Taylor was also arrested and charged with one count of accessory after the fact. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the roles of all individuals involved continued.
