The death of Cortez Hopkins occurred on February 24, 2018, in Jackson, Mississippi, marking a violent end to the life of the 27-year-old Black male. Reports from the time indicate the incident involved gunfire directed into a residence, a dangerous act that resulted in Hopkins sustaining fatal injuries. Alongside the fatality, another individual at the scene was reportedly grazed by a bullet during the shooting, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attack on the dwelling.
The initial investigation left the case open for over a year as detectives worked to identify those responsible for the homicide.
Significant developments in the case did not emerge until October 2019, more than eighteen months after the shooting. Investigators from the Jackson Police Department announced the arrest of two suspects in connection with Hopkins' death. Marquis Bell, who was 22 years old at the time of his arrest, was charged with murder. Authorities also arrested 26-year-old Kadarius Sandifer, charging him with evidence tampering and obstruction of justice related to the investigation. Following their initial court appearances, both men were originally denied bond, signaling the severity with which the judicial system viewed the charges.
However, the legal proceedings took a turn when the murder suspect, Marquis Bell, was eventually granted a bond set at $100,000 by a Hinds County judge after an appeal to the Mississippi Supreme Court returned the matter to the lower court. Bell posted bail and was released from custody while awaiting further legal action, having never been formally indicted for the murder charge. The case against him came to an abrupt and violent halt on August 8, 2020, when Bell himself became the victim of gun violence. He was shot and killed during an altercation at an apartment complex in Jackson, effectively ending the prosecution's primary path to resolving the homicide of Cortez Hopkins.
