In the summer of 2018, the life of 18-year-old Jamarius VerNon Lloyd was cut short in a burst of gunfire. A Black/African American male from Meridian, Mississippi, he was fatally wounded on the evening of June 11, 2018. The incident that claimed his life was a drive-by shooting, a sudden act of violence that unfolded near his mother's home, adding a layer of profound tragedy to the event.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but the injuries Lloyd sustained were too severe. His death was a shock to those who knew him and a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on communities. In the days that followed, family and friends gathered to mourn the loss of a young man who was affectionately known as 'Jay.' He was remembered for his beautiful smile and for being the life of family get-togethers.
The Meridian Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led to the arrest of a suspect, 17-year-old Kenmonten Wooten. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder and drive-by shooting in connection with Jamarius VerNon Lloyd's death. Following his arrest, Wooten waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
