On August 16th, 55-year-old Trudy Garner, a White female, was found deceased in her residence on Highway 37, roughly five miles north of the town. Authorities from the Smith County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene after receiving a call from Trudy's
63-year-old husband, Wayne Garner, around 9:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, deputies discovered both Trudy and Wayne Garner deceased. The investigation that followed determined that the incident was a murder-suicide. It is believed that Wayne Garner shot and killed his wife before turning the weapon on himself. A shotgun was recovered at the residence.
