In the early morning hours of January 8, 2024, the life of 24-year-old Tremya Chermaine Darden of Okolona, Mississippi, was tragically cut short. Responding to a call about a shooting shortly before 4 a.m. at the Lazy Acres Trailer Park on Lesa Avenue in Verona, police discovered Darden with a gunshot wound to her head. She was rushed to a hospital in Tupelo, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Present at the scene was her 25-year-old boyfriend, Dandre Edward Lydale McGinister of
Tupelo. McGinister told investigators that the shooting was an accident, claiming that he had dropped his gun, causing it to discharge and strike Darden. Despite his account, authorities took him into custody. Friends of Darden suggested she had recently discovered unsettling information about McGinister and had intended to end the relationship.
McGinister was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, and his bond was set at $1 million. At the time of the incident, he was already out on a felony bond for a separate vehicle-related charge in Lowndes County. During his initial court appearance, he repeatedly expressed that he did not mean to shoot his girlfriend.
The case was later presented to a Lee County grand jury. After reviewing the evidence and hearing testimony, the grand jury decided not to indict McGinister on the murder charge, concluding there was insufficient evidence that Darden's death was intentional. As a result, McGinister was released from jail. Darden's family expressed their profound disappointment and feeling of being let down by the grand jury's decision, vowing to continue seeking justice for her. The Verona police chief has stated that the investigation into her death remains open.
