On the evening of May 15, 2019, the quiet of Myrtle Street in Jackson’s Belhaven neighborhood was broken by gunfire inside a modest house where Margaret Victoria Pierce had built a late-in-life routine of ordinary days. Pierce, a 73-year-old white woman, lived there with her longtime boyfriend, Hugh McLaurin, in a part of northeast Jackson better known for old trees and front porches than police tape and flashing lights.
