Alexius Cotton, a 47-year-old Black woman from Jackson, Mississippi, was killed in a shooting that turned an ordinary Sunday into a scene of flashing lights and unanswered questions. By the time word spread through the neighborhood, the story was already settling into the familiar pattern of shock and disbelief: a life gone in an instant, a home transformed into a crime scene, and a family left to reckon with the silence that follows.

Late that morning, officers with Capitol Police were dispatched to a residence on Meadowbrook Road/Drive after a report of gunfire. They arrived just before noon and found Cotton dead inside, the result of an apparent gunshot wound. The Hinds County interim coroner later identified her as the victim, putting a name to what had first been described only as a fatal shooting call.

Investigators released little about what happened inside the home or what led up to the violence, leaving the public with only the narrow frame of official statements and the stark fact of her death. Capitol Police described the case as open and ongoing, and in the immediate aftermath, they did not lay out a motive, a sequence of events, or any broader narrative that might explain why Cotton was killed.

Authorities did acknowledge that someone at the scene was taken into custody. According to reporting that relayed the agency’s statement, one individual present at the residence was arrested, but officials did not publicly identify that person or clarify whether the arrest reflected suspicion in Cotton’s killing or another circumstance connected to the response. No publicly released charging details or court timeline were included in those early updates, and investigators indicated additional information might come later if and when it could be shared.

In the days that followed, online records about the date varied, with at least one public gun-violence memorial entry listing a different date, but local reporting and a funeral home obituary for Cotton reflected the death as occurring on November 9, 2025. What remained consistent across the available accounts was the core tragedy: Cotton was found shot to death at a Jackson residence on Meadowbrook, and the investigation—shadowed by limited official detail—was still unfolding beyond the edges of what the public could see.
