In a tragic turn of events, Cedric Willis, a 44-year-old man who had endured 12 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, was shot and killed on June 24, 2019, in Jackson, Mississippi. His life was cut short just two blocks from his home, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless loss of a man who had already overcome immense injustice.
Years before his untimely death, Cedric Willis's life was irrevocably altered in 1994 when, at the age of 19, he was wrongfully convicted of
murder and armed robbery. Despite a lack of physical evidence and descriptions of the perpetrator that did not match him, he was sentenced to life in prison. It wasn't until 2006, with the help of the Innocence Project New Orleans, that he was finally exonerated and freed. In the years following his release, Willis dedicated himself to sharing his story, becoming a motivational speaker and an advocate for voter registration.
