In the spring of 2020, a young man's life was cut short in Jackson, Mississippi, over what began as a trivial dispute. Quindarius Gibson, a 21-year-old male, was fatally shot on April 25, 2020, in the parking lot of the Pine Ridge Garden Apartments, a complex also known as Rebelwood located on Rebelwood Drive. The events that culminated in his death reportedly began with a disagreement over a small amount of money won in a dice game earlier in the week.
On the day of the shooting, Gibson
had accompanied his mother to the apartment complex. While there, a confrontation ensued with a group of individuals. According to his mother, Nicole Gibson, the situation escalated to the point where her son felt threatened and asked for his uncle's gun for protection, a request she denied. She stated that she called the police for assistance, but instead of receiving help for her son, she was escorted off the property by officers.
Following the altercation, the situation turned deadly. Quindarius Gibson was shot and killed. In the aftermath of the shooting, a man named Joe Willis, who was 38 years old at the time, was identified as the alleged shooter. Willis was subsequently arrested and faced legal proceedings in connection with Gibson's death. However, he was later released on bond.
In the years following her son's death, Nicole Gibson has pursued legal action, filing a lawsuit against the owners and management of the Rebelwood apartment complex. Her lawsuit alleges that negligence in providing adequate security at the property contributed to the circumstances that led to her son's death.
