In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Jackson, Mississippi, a scene of violence erupted at The Daiquiri Bar on West Capitol Street, forever altering the lives of many. On August 17, 2024, amidst what should have been a typical weekend night, gunfire shattered the peace, leaving one young man dead and five others wounded. The deceased was identified as 25-year-old Niger Devon McGee.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m., when law enforcement was called to the downtown
establishment. Upon their arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene with six individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. While five of the victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries, Niger Devon McGee was pronounced dead at the scene. The ages of the injured ranged from 19 to 24. In the wake of the tragedy, the bar temporarily closed its doors, expressing deep sadness and pledging to cooperate fully with the ongoing police investigation to ensure that justice was served.
For over a month, the investigation into the mass shooting continued, culminating in an arrest in late September. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety announced the apprehension of 23-year-old Cleon Walker in connection with the deadly shooting. Walker was subsequently charged with one count of murder for the death of Niger Devon McGee and five counts of aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by the other victims.
